Quote of the Week: James Allan, “Democracy in Decline”

james-allanUsers of the word democracy who opt for this fat, morally repugnant usage want it to convey two things. The first is a claim about how decisions are made. The second is a claim about the goodness, or not-too-badness, of those decisions. Put in more straightforward terms, on this substantive, fat understanding, ‘democratic’ is a description of both (1) that decision-making is being done by some acceptably majoritarian process as well as (2) that the decisions actually made pass some pre-established moral threshold.
